Everything You Need to Know About Dental Crowns

Are you sick and tired of having to go back to the dentist every few years for the same tooth that keeps breaking? Looking for a more permanent and aesthetic dental option? Porcelain crowns may be a great solution for you! Not only do they look great and can give you back any loss of confidence, but they are also a long-term solution that works out to be the most affordable.

What is a crown?

A crown is manufactured tooth made of porcelain that will cover your teeth like a helmet or ‘cap’ to provide maximum protection. Crowns are often crucial in increasing the life and function of a structurally damaged tooth.

They are frequently the best treatment option available for badly broken, heavily restored, cracked or root canal treated teeth.

While crowns are most commonly used for for strength and protection of teeth, they are also a frequently used cosmetic dental procedure to enhance and restore smiles.

Superior Strength, Appearance and Convenience

At Diamond Dental Centre, we practice some of the most innovative restorative procedures of modern dentistry in North Brisbane. Our crowns are made from lithium desilicated ceramic, well-known for their outstanding strength and astonishing resemblance to natural teeth.

Our crowns are designed and milled by computer control to fit perfectly and look indistinguishable from your natural teeth. The entire treatment, which includes preparing the tooth, designing, milling and lastly cementing the crown permanently into your mouth is all completed in our clinic in as little as 3 hours. This ensures that you are able to receive superior care and convenience in a one-stop-shop without having to endure an uncomfortable temporary crown for two weeks.

How long does a dental crown last?

On average porcelain crowns can last between a minimum of 10 to 15 years. However, to ensure the longevity of your dental crown it is important to maintain good oral hygiene. To help extend the lifespan of your porcelain crown and your natural teeth:

  • Avoid biting on hard objects like ice, hard lollies, pen caps, or fingernails

  • Maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing twice daily and regular flossing.

  • Avoid grinding and clenching your teeth.

Are porcelain crowns better than white fillings?

Porcelain crowns not only look beautiful and incredibly natural, they are much stronger than composites. As stated above, a porcelain crown can last between 10-15 years, whereas a composite only lasts between 5-7years and is much more prone to chipping. Porcelain crowns will also look more aesthetically pleasing due to the translucency, allowing the crown to blend and look more natural.

 Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

  • Is a minimally invasive procedure and relatively straightforward

  • Entire procedure is completed in as little as 3 hours, in comparison to two weeks at other clinics

 What is a bridge?

Once a tooth is lost, it can negatively affect the surrounding teeth by removing the support and stability of the previous tooth. Over time, the adjacent teeth will shift, potentially tilting inwards and the opposing tooth will overgrow. Your facial appearance can also change due to a lost tooth, causing your cheek to sink in and a wrinkle to form.

Dental bridges are designed to fill the gaps left behind by missing teeth. The two adjacent teeth will be shaped to allow a crown to fit and a scan will be taken of your prepared teeth. A bridge will be manufactured which consists of two crowns holding a tooth to permanently replace the gap. Once the bridge is cemented into position, it looks and works just like natural teeth. A very small gap is left underneath the ‘floating’ tooth to ensure flossing is still possible.

A bridge is a great option if the adjacent teeth are heavily filled and would benefit from the protection of the crowns. However, if the adjacent teeth in question are completely healthy, we may recommend replacing the gap with an implant. Book online to find out what option is best for you.

A new smile for a very anxious patient.

Smile Design.jpg

Charmaine was born without her lateral incisors and a previous dentist had attempted to widen her teeth with composite to close the gaps. This caused her teeth to look far too wide and prone to staining. She hadn’t considered any other options as she is very scared of the dentist!

On her first visit with Dr Luma, Charmaine told us that she had considered having all her teeth extracted and replaced with a denture, anything to make her smile look better. Using the latest 3D technology, we were able to create a digital design showing her what we could achieve with porcelain crowns and bridges.

In only 2 visits, we were able to completely transform Charmaine's smile! We closed the gaps without any orthodontic treatment and created a gorgeous bright smile that will never discolour or stain! 🦷💎
